We live in a world where screens are often taken for granted. How has the omnipresence of video transformed visual perception? This course focuses on video installation and the ways moving images shift our relationship to objects, space, and one another.

Students will gain hands-on experience with projection-mapping software and learn to edit video for multi-channel installations, focusing on how to create truly immersive environments. Through weekly exercises and regular group critiques, we will unpack how the videos we encounter daily change our relationship with both our own bodies and the material world. We will look at work by artists who emphasize the physicality or immateriality of video through installation, performance, and web-based art.

Building on the history of experimental and avant-garde practices of the 20th and 21st centuries, work in this course may take the form of installations, performances, videos, texts, participatory projects, or site-specific works. Successful completion of the course provides a solid foundation for experimentation in the expanded field of contemporary artistic practice.

Enrollment preference will be given to students who have successfully completed ARST 286 or ARST 287.
