Following Fornés: Creativity, Intimacy, and Imagination
THEA 352
Spring 2025
Section: 01
Crosslisting: CHUM 352

This course undertakes an investigation and application of the creative process of visionary iconoclast Maria Irene Fornés: a queer, Latinx playwright whose wildly idiosyncratic plays defied both convention and categorization. Fornés' legendary workshops shaped a generation of playwrights, including Nilo Cruz, Caridad Svich, and Sarah Ruhl. Students will engage with Fornés' own creative process via her published plays and unpublished ephemera, including the spoken fragments, outtakes, and audio marginalia left behind from the filming of her documentary collaboration with director Michelle Memran, "The Rest I Make Up," applying what we discover to the conception and creation of individual performance works. Our work will be contextualized by assigned readings and research into Fornés as a key figure of the American theater. Syllabus includes daily journaling, weekly reading, a group research project, and ongoing work on individual creative projects. This class welcomes an interdisciplinary cohort of students. Those who are interested in writing/creating live works of performance of all kinds are best suited to this class. No experience necessary.
