The class would involve a series of discussions around field recordings and site-specific compositions. This would involve a survey of landmark and recent recordings in this vein (e.g., Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster, and Paniotis [Deep Listening Band] at the Dan Harpole Cistern; Chris Watson's "Outside the Circle of Fire"; Sylvi MacCormac's "Voices and Wheels"; Peter Cusack's "Sounds from Dangerous Places"; and works by Jacob Kirkegaard, among other sound artists and composers). |

Examinations and Assignments: The course may also include hands-on workshops for unconventional recording techniques, and/or site visits to areas offering unusual sonic research and exploration. Of particular importance would be discussions of what presents itself as "dirt" or "noise" in the recording, and how that may be conceptualized as indexical to our understandings of space and recorded sonic material. Class will involve listening, journals, discussion, and could culminate in either a paper and/or creative project to be presented at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The class is POI as students need to have had some prior encounter with experimental music or sound practices, field recording, or both. Students should email Professor Matthusen expressing their interest in the course, and any coursework or encounters they had with topics related to the course material. |
