This course introduces the art and architecture of the ancient and medieval West. The artistic traditions of the Near East, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the medieval world, from Paris to Baghdad, will be surveyed from the prehistoric era to ca. 1400 CE. Questions of style, content, function, and cultural context will be examined alongside issues of religion, rulership, class, luxury, and the place of the human. The definition of art itself will be repeatedly probed across these decidedly pre- and non-modern milieus. |
