The Short Film: Study and Practice

For first-time filmmakers, the short film is an essential learning tool for finding and honing a personal vision. This course is designed for prospective majors and introduces the core fundamentals of visual storytelling for short fiction films. Through close study and analysis of a wide variety of short films by established and emerging filmmakers, students will learn how to identify and employ the principles of narrative structure and examine the strategy and impact of formal choices on the viewer. Course assignments include a short film analysis paper, loglines and treatments, pitch deck presentations, and two short film screenplays. Please note: This course cannot be taken simultaneously with other screenwriting courses. |

Weekly writing assignments, one film analysis paper, in-class writing workshops of works in progress, submission of final portfolio. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course is designed for prospective majors who have completed the CFILM gateway courses, FILM 307 and FILM 304. Sophomores currently enrolled in FILM 307 may request a POI.
