Cinema and the French Theatrical Tradition

This course examines the connections between French theater and film by looking at manifestations of the theatrical tradition in 20th- and 21st-century cinema. We will read four plays and view a selection of films, along with commentary by directors, playwrights, and actors on their craft. Coursework will focus on the development of literary and visual analysis, the acquisition of terminology related to theater and film, and the appreciation of these two art forms in their past and current contexts. |

Plays may include Molière¿s Le Misanthrope (1666), Marivaux¿s Le Jeu de l¿amour et du hasard (1730), Feydeau¿s Le Dindon (1896), and Rostand¿s Cyrano de Bergerac (1897). Films may include Cocteau¿s Orphée (1950), Rappeneau¿s Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), Veber¿s Le Dîner de cons (1998), Kechiche¿s L¿Esquive (2003), and Le Guay¿s Alceste à bicyclette (2013).

Weekly response papers, 2 short papers, 1 presentation, and final project. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
While any student who has completed FREN215 with a minimum grade of B or has placed out of FREN215 through the placement test may sign up for this course, it is an introductory course intended for students who have just completed 215 or not taken more than one course in French beyond 215 and not yet studied abroad in a French-speaking country. Only COL students may take this course CR/U. All others must take it for a letter grade. Students who are not admitted to the course through pre-registration are strongly encouraged to submit an enrollment request and attend the class the first day. Taught in French. |
