Guns, Gender, and Religion in American Culture
HIST 228
Spring 2027
Section: 01

How does religious faith influence the way Americans feel about guns? By exploring the relationship between religious identity, beliefs about guns, and gender ideals, this course helps students understand American political history and our American present. We will analyze ideas of masculinity and femininity in twentieth and twenty-first century American religious traditions and how these interact with gun ownership, gun usage, and gun reform. Using scholarship from history, sociology, media and religious studies, and by examining primary sources including fiction and film, students in this course will investigate the place of guns in American politics, culture, and public life.
