THEA 143

| Section:

Students in this course will explore the creation of theater and music inspired by a collective reading of Dante's Divine Comedy, Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow, Anna Deavere Smith's Notes from the Field, and a range of texts examining the impact of mass incarceration on communities of color. The course will examine how activists and artists have drawn on gospel, rap, spirituals, and other musical and theatrical forms to survive, heal, and advocate for social change. Through creative and analytical work, students will consider the contemporary relevance of Dante's poem to issues of justice, voice, and power, with an emphasis on amplifying marginalized perspectives and interrogating the structures of the carceral state. |
