This course offers students the opportunity to build skills and experience as translators of cultural texts by producing Japanese-to-English translations of the lyrics to select modern Japanese popular songs. Students will formulate their own individual translations of the assigned song each week, and then work together in class sessions to amend and further develop those translations, learning from each other's choices and strategies in order to arrive at the most effective rendering possible. Successful completion of JAPN 218 required; heritage learners, native speakers of Japanese, and others with advanced Japanese language skills (both spoken and written) are welcome in the course, with advance permission from the instructor. |

In this CLAC course, students will put forward favorite modern/contemporary Japanese popular songs for translation into English. Primary lyrical texts to be translated will thus change from year to year, depending on class composition and student interest. From time to time, the instructor will also assign limited reading on translation methods, ethics, and so on.

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will work individually and in groups to generate translations of the lyrical texts proposed by class colleagues each week. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Successful completion of advanced-level Japanese study (at least JAPN 218) is required. Native speakers of Japanese, heritage learners, and others with advanced-level Japanese language abilities (both spoken and written) are welcome with advance permission from the instructor. |
