Community-Engaged Qualitative Research: Teacher Voices

CSPL 306
Fall 2025
Section: 01
Course Cluster and Certificates: Community-Engaged Learning, Service Learning

This course will focus on context-specific community based participatory research methods. The research project undertaken in fall 2025 will be investigating the experiences of local public school teachers. The goal of the project is to elevate the voices of public school teachers as they navigate the changing educational landscape and to explore the space between public perceptions/depictions of teachers and the reality of their work by creating textured portraits of individual teachers and their classrooms. Students will learn theories and methods of community-engaged research through scholarly study and hands-on experience gathering and analyzing qualitative and ethnographic data, primarily interviews and observations, with a focus on Lightfoot's methods of Portraiture in social science research. Students should be prepared to engage deeply with community members. Some travel within Connecticut will be required. Previous coursework in Education Studies preferred.
