In this course we will explore the connected histories of the "felt life of Black feminism" (Nash 2019) and Black feminist contributions to empowerment movements both inside and outside of the academy. Our class proceeds by reading some of the seminal texts that circulate as theory in U.S. academic Black feminism alongside 20th and 21st century memoirs and poetry to explore how Black feminists articulate the relationship between their politics and the everyday psychic negotiations that comprise moments of terror, rage, anxiety, melancholy, tenderness, joy, etc. This course engages in the study of collective minoritarian affect, feelings, and emotions as well as outlines their relationship to Black and/or women's liberation movements. |
