Antisemitism is a complex subject. This course employs popular culture to study it. We will explore a wide range of texts from different periods. Some promote Antisemitism, and some challenge or combat it. We will examine how bigots use the media to spread hate, how Jews and their peers use it to challenge jew hatred, and how popular culture sometimes subconsciously perpetuates harmful stereotypes. We will discuss how humor and satire are utilized to tackle serious issues. We will also see how popular culture views Antisemitism in the broader context of White supremacy and violence directed at other minority groups. Most importantly, we will ask -- what can we learn from the media on Antisemitism, and what can Antisemitism teach us about the media? |
