Special Topics: Poets in Translation
ENGL 372
Fall 2024
| Section:
01
|
In this craft seminar, students will read texts on the challenges of translation, then dive into the close readings of poems in various translations. What inclinations might we observe of poets of different regions and times, which break the customary "rules" of the American workshop poem? What new possibilities might we glimpse--and "translate" into our own work? In turn, we will read contemporary poets who exercise their own form of translation out of the English language elsewhere. Students will be invited to translate poems into English, as well as experiment with the techniques they have observed in poems in translation. |
