TechnoPrisons: Corrections, Technology, and Society
STS 325
Spring 2025
Section: 01

In the United States, the physical permanence and cultural hegemony of prisons complicate efforts at meaningful prison reform and prison abolition. How do nation states practically accomplish imprisonment? Prisons are a locus for multiple forms of social closure and physical captivity, made possible through integrated technological systems including architecture, surveillance, media, biomedicine, classification, and administration. This seminar explores concepts and theories within science and technology studies, cultural sociology, and penology that together will help us examine prisons as technologies and the role that specific technological systems play in making imprisonment happen.
