This course is a continuation of JAPN101, and will approach elementary-level Japanese from two angles: form (grammar) and context (social usage). Students will continue to enhance their fundamental skills in Japanese, with a focus on describing thought and action, expressing intent, and developing intercultural and interpersonal communicative abilities (Invitation, asking for and giving permissions, making requests, stating reasons, offering help, etc). The course will continue to emphasize reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, and will familiarize students with various aspects of Japanese culture through the textbook and other media and study materials. Textbook Genki Lesson 5-Lesson 8 will be covered and 56 additional kanji will be introduced. By the conclusion of the semester, students will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: 1. Read and write in Japanese. 2. Formulate coherent paragraphs employing Kanji characters. 3. Articulate descriptions of various activities. 4. Express personal opinions. 5. Appropriately cite and reproduce individuals' spoken statements. 6. Engage in dialogues utilizing both formal and informal linguistic registers. 7. Gain insights into Japanese history and culture. 8. Identify and analyze parallels and distinctions between Japanese culture and that of the United States or other nations. 9. Investigate the impact of Western/American influences on Japanese language and cultural dynamics. |
