AFAM 394 |
In Space is the Place, jazz musician and cosmic philosopher Sun Ra states that "the first thing to do is to consider time as officially ended. We work on the other side of time." Afrofuturist narratives tend to unfold in this inverted time, or "after the end of the world." In this class, we will begin our research in the loop of Sun Ra's speculative refrain. We will examine cinematic depictions of hauntings, dystopias, aliens, the surreal, and space travel. We will discuss works by Anisia Uzeyman, Ryan Coogler, Wanuri Kahui, Ngozi Onwurah, Terrance Nance, Jordan Peele, Mati Diop and more. |
