Trouble in Mind: The History of Psychiatry in the United States
HIST 295
Spring 2025
| Section:
01
|
This is a class in the history of psychiatry (and to a lesser degree, the disciplines that comprise clinical psychology). Many of us experience disturbances of mood, thought, and behavior over the course of our lives. When we do, we sometimes seek help from those with training in medicine or psychology. This has not always been the case, however. The question we explore in this seminar is how this came to be. In so doing, we will consider how theories seeking to explain the mind and therapies seeking to treat its invisible wounds have evolved over the past two-plus centuries. And how that evolution has shaped and been shaped by the shifting ways we see, hear, imagine, react to, and -- ultimately -- attempt to relieve mental anguish. |
