This course offers a broad introduction to the history of the Mediterranean 'world' (and whether that is a useful category) from the end of antiquity to early modernity. Taking a thematic approach, we will explore the entangled histories of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian societies, and investigate the Mediterranean as a dynamic site of interaction, competition, and creativity. Topics will include the legacies of empire, cultural, religious, and economic exchanges; conflict and conversion; translation and scientific developments; and others. |
