This course explores key themes in Islamic history from the emergence of Islam in 7th-century Western Arabia to the Mongol conquests and the fall of Baghdad in 1258. Focusing on the early and medieval periods, with particular attention to the Near Eastern context, we will engage with both secondary scholarship and primary sources to deepen our understanding of the cultural, intellectual, and social history of what constitutes "Islamic" civilization. Topics include the Late Antique context in which the Prophet Muhammad lived, the tenets of the faith, the development of religious and political authority through the caliphate, the translation movement from classical Greek science and philosophy via Syriac into Arabic and the subsequent rise in "rational theology," encounters with the Eastern Roman Empire, the Mongol conquests that ended the caliphate, and other topics. |
