Contemporary Trans Literatures
FGSS 341
Fall 2025
Section: 01

This course will explore the creative and critical output of trans and gender non-conforming writers, paying special attention to poetry, narrative fiction, and memoir. What literary traditions do trans and gender non-conforming writers draw from to establish our own inhabitations of style and form? How do trans and gender non-conforming writers attend to the erotic dimensions of writing? How do trans literatures address the relation between race, gender and sexuality? What can transness illuminate about the relation between literature and the law? What are the ethical stakes of trans literature? In addition to a deep engagement with the racial politics of transness in the United States, we will make an equal effort to consider perspectives from the global south in our pursuit of answers to these questions.
