Constructing Black Interiors
FGSS 299
Spring 2026
| Section:
01
|
An allusion to Elizabeth Alexander's noteworthy book of essays, this course will consider the way in which notions of the "interior" or "interiority" have been central to Black identity formation and Black cultural expression. We will begin by exploring the social and political reasons for this development and investigate the relationship between African American cultural production and the regulative force of race, gender, sexuality, class, and ability as systems of social organization. Making recourse to Black studies, theater and performance studies, affect theory, queer theory, geography, sociology, and their disciplinary intersections, we will attempt to engage the materiality of this spatial metaphor, encountering writers and artists who use text and image to construct interior space and do so in ways that challenge social structures and normative conceptions of identity. |
