This class explores the intersections between hip hop and cinema. It considers the development of hip hop-centered films in the 1980s, the casting of rap stars in subsequent 90s films, and the varied constructions of race, gender, and place that are integral to hip hop's visual/sonic culture. We will discuss many filmmakers, including Spike Lee, John Singleton, Cauleen Smith, Mario Van Peebles, Ernest Dickerson, Leslie Harris, F.
