Videographic Criticism
FILM 313
Fall 2025
Section: 01

Since the 2010s, audiovisual essay practice or videographic criticism has set the foundations for a new mode of film scholarship by editing, remixing, reinterpreting, and deconstructing media. In this course, we will explore the recent history and practice of videographic criticism and create original video essays and accompanying theoretical statements. Students should expect to spend several hours reading, writing, watching, and video editing outside of class per week. Weekly screenings and readings will include work featured in journals including [in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film & Moving Image Studies, Tecmerin Journal of Audiovisual Essays, ASAP/Review, and others. Prior experience with Adobe Premiere Pro is helpful but is not required. Students will produce weekly video essay exercises, write two short papers, and create a final project video essay.
