Molded For a Purpose: The Nuts and Bolts of Mass Manufacturing
IDEA 213
Fall 2025
Section: 01

In this course, we will explore mass manufacturing techniques with a strong focus on hands-on experience designing, manufacturing, and analyzing a multi-part mechanism of the students' own design. We will be using injection molding as our primary manufacturing technique, with additional use of vacuum forming, 3D printing, milling, and waterjetting. We will also use a plastic shredder to explore the engineering side of plastic recycling. In addition to the hands-on project, there will be explorations of mass manufacturing more broadly through comparisons of different mass-manufacturing technologies, use of analytical techniques used in factory settings, and applications of design for manufacturing and assembly best practices. Throughout the semester, we will learn how to communicate like an engineer through engineering drawings.
