This course charts a genealogy of anthropology's long and critical engagement with capitalism as a transnational political, cultural, and economic force. We begin with classic theories and debates about capitalism, social change, and globalization. We then turn to how anthropologists have built on, extended, and tweaked these insights to illuminate capitalist world making and lifeworlds. Reading ethnographies that take us from factory floors to gig work; from logos to brands and knock offs; from wall street to occupy wall street; from extractivism to regeneration of life in devastated landscapes, and more, we delve into fundamental questions about power and resistance, human nature and sociality, production and labor, consumption and taste, struggle and justice, and radical reimaginations of life under and beyond capitalism. |
