The Politics of Emotions
AMST 306
Spring 2027
Section: 01

This course treats emotions as social expressions that both shape and are shaped by the world. Drawing on ethnographic case studies, we examine the social life of sentiments and trace how emotions function as a medium through which narratives of American citizenship are formed. We begin with interdisciplinary scholarship on affect, emotions, feelings, and moods to establish a shared analytical framework for our case studies. Each week, we focus on the social formation of a specific emotion, including hate, anger, horror, terror, love, shame, resentment, and compassion. The course will be grounded in a critique of liberal concepts such as freedom, rights, autonomy, and human rights.
