COL 271

This course pursues a sustained study of the form of the sonnet within the genre of lyric poetry from its genesis in 13th-century Sicilian and Provençal poetic practices to its height during the Renaissance, and then onward to its reimagining by Romantic, Modern, and Contemporary poets. We will explore the way in which lyric poetry engages non-narrative modes of meaning-making within the formal expectations of the sonnet. Founding our reading in this initial understanding of the restrictions of the form, we will go on to explore the ways in which sonnets think and inspire our own thinking through them. Poets to be read include those writing in English (such as Shakespeare, Keats, Millay, and Stallings) as well as translations of poets writing in the Romance Languages (such as Dante, Labé, Stampa, and Garcilaso). Writing assignments will include both creative and analytic writing. |
