The Persian Illustrated Book
ARHA 387
Spring 2026
Section: 01

From comic books to Magritte's "This is not a pipe," there are numerous ways texts and images connect. Do images and texts "speak" differently, or can they be in sync? In this seminar, we turn to fourteenth- to seventeenth-century illustrations of a body of Persian literary masterpieces, among them Ferdowsi's Book of Kings and Nizami's Quintet. Our discussions will focus on artistic media and translation: What can an artist's illustration choices tell us about their reading of the text? What happens when a literary work moves from book to picture, culture to culture, painting to vessel? Students will get hands-on experience with rare books.
