The Shaping of a Landscape: Exploring the Geology of Western North America

In this course, students will explore the geologic history that formed the western margin of the North American continent over more than 600 million years. The first half of the course will review fundamental solid earth processes, including plate tectonics, sedimentology, and volcanology in the context of the geology of western North America, in preparation for a mandatory one-week field trip to the region during the first week of spring break. In the second half of the course, students will interpret their observations from the field in the context of the ongoing study of the geology of western North America.
