Conversational Japanese Through Role Play
JAPN 228
Fall 2025
| Section:
01
|
Using a situational approach, students will learn through spoken practice various Japanese expressions for functions such as requests, invitations, apologies, comfort, encouragement, offers, advice, permission, humility, and how to describe or explain situations, explain procedures, ask for corrections, make excuses, and share topics, etc., in different situations. Additionally, in these situations, students will practice switching smoothly to the most appropriate speech styles (casual/polite/honorific) based on the relationship or psychological distance between the speaker and the listener so that their Japanese sounds "natural" to people they are engaging with out in the "real world." Students will be given situations in class, and they will think of appropriate conversations for those situations, studying through role-playing. Students must adjust the level of politeness based on the given relationship. The role playing and discussions will also derive from students watching scenes from popular Japanese media (movies, drama, internet, etc.) and then talking about them. |
