Writing About Healthcare is a seminar which introduces students to models of writing about illness and health systems designed to address illness. The class will include both physical welfare and behavioral health, and will greatly focus on the cultural, social, and economic systems in which illness and treatment take place. Texts will include the professor's current project, on the commodification of illness by corporations; also Robert Kolker's Hidden Valley Road; Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down; Rebecca Skloot's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks; Porochista Khakpour's Sick: A Memoir; and excerpts from the work of Thomas Mann (The Magic Mountain), Walker Percy, and Robert Coles. |
