Lithic (stone) tools are the oldest known type of human technology. They represent the most abundant and by extension one of the most informative components of the archaeological record for reconstructing ancient human behavior over the last 3.3 million years. In this course, students will learn the methodological and theoretical basics used by archaeologists working on the Stone Age. The course includes hands-on training in how to identify and analyze stone tools, qualitative and quantitative approaches, and interpretive frameworks that allow archaeologists to use stone tools to understand broader anthropological questions about the evolution and diversity of human behavior. Students will analyze actual archaeological assemblages from important Stone Age sites stored in the Wesleyan University Archaeology and Anthropology Collections. Through this, students will be exposed to elements of data collection protocols and research design in a collections setting. Further, students will design exhibits for the campus community that incorporate the collections and the data they produce. |
