This course offers an introduction to methods for all students who are interested in experimental, critical and creative approaches to research and scholarly inquiry in the social sciences and humanities. This course examines a variety of methodological approaches used in feminist studies, queer studies, and trans studies as (comparatively newer) fields of inquiry into complex intersections of sexuality, gender, race, nation, state, disability, class, ethnicity, religion, and diaspora. We draw from disciplines and fields in the humanities and social sciences (including literary studies, cultural studies, anthropology and sociology, history, and urban studies) and explore how scholars in feminist, queer, and trans studies have used, re-used, mixed, and re-mixed methods, including ethnography, archival research, close reading, oral history, and creative work. Through these (re)uses and (re)mixes, feminist, queer, and trans studies scholars have provided rich and complex questions of methodology (the study of method) and epistemology (the study of knowledge), and draw attention to how methodology and epistemology are intricately and inextricably linked. How do we know what we know about where, when, and whom -- and why does it matter, and in what ways? Considering questions of methodology and epistemology is particularly powerful and urgent for questions of sexuality and gender precisely because these terms gather together categories of intense attachment, categories and forms of experience, desire, value, belonging, infrastructure -- in other words, categories and forms of power -- produced through frames of race, citizenship, diaspora, disability, class, ethnicity, religion. |
