Enemies of the State: Gender, Race, and the Nation
FGSS 319
Fall 2026
| Section:

|
This course analyzes how gender and race function as boundaries for defining national belonging in contemporary political life. Students examine the construction of borders -- both literal and figurative -- that determine who counts as part of "the nation" and who is cast as a threat to it. Studying both right-wing movements and liberal opposition, their strategies and their failures, the course addresses anti-trans politics, migration and border enforcement, reproductive governance, and the reconfiguration of gender and racial hierarchies. Focusing primarily but not exclusively on the contemporary U.S., the course considers authoritarian and populist formations, liberal responses, and practices of refusal and resistance. |
