Black Lives, Black Power & Black Politics
GOVT 229
Spring 2027
Section: 01

This course will explore the lineage of Black politics, with a particular focus on the social movements that have brought Black political thought to the forefront of the national conversation, through the lens of the academy and popular culture. In particular, students will learn about the many different iterations of the struggle for Black political freedom and autonomy, starting before the United States existed. We will trace this through slavery, reconstruction, the civil rights movement, all the way up to the contemporary Black Lives Matter movement. The course will provide considerable historical background on the conditions that created these movements and the ever-present role of government in shaping their trajectory. We will explore the commonalities and innovations in these struggles over time, and how they have shaped the development of the American state. We will also explore the degree to which patterns of dispossession, exploitation, and resistance have not only shaped the engagement of Black Americans with the broader polity, but also the way these same themes have weighed on the contributions of Black Americans to broader American culture. For the latter aspect we will engage with both popular music and film. Students will leave the course with a broader understanding of the historical context in which Black politics emerged, the themes that have commonly animated the many iterations of this struggle, and how this has all shaped the landscape of popular American culture.
