Special Topics: Conversations with Writers

ENGL 348
Spring 2027
Section: 01

What is a writer like, beyond their book(s)? How might they discuss the preoccupations and questions that inform their work? Structured as a seminar that extends on select days to include the Russell House Reading Series, this course will give students the opportunity to speak with some of the writers whose books we will read in class. In addition to this, we will read/watch interviews of those other writers assigned in class. Together, we will discuss how writers grapple with complex questions about being alive today. We will analyze structure, content, idea, and writerly intent. We will attend the Russell House Reading series prepared to engage in informed conversations with the guest. What we bring back to class will be an understanding of some aspect of literature that will help us frame our ongoing readings. This course will be dynamic and expansive in how it imagines (and reimagines) the ideas resting within a text, and those complicated further by having a conversation with its author.
