The Library (FYS)
ENGL 132F
Spring 2027
Section: 01

The library is not just a physical repository of texts. Rather, it is an institution organized around the fear of oblivion. It has developed all sorts of protocols and systems to save ideas, texts, and people from being lost to history. But fantasies of the infinite library and the pursuit of the perfect cataloguing system have, in turn, disciplined knowledge, produced new categories, and rendered entire traditions and histories unfindable via its organizing logics. In this course, we will approach the library as both a space for democratizing knowledge and a locus of exclusion too -- a lifeline and a tomb all at once. While we will read and write about different libraries across time and space, we will also ground many of our discussions in the holdings, spaces, and history of our very own Olin Library. One of the aims of this course, beyond introducing students to the intellectual history of the library as such, is to familiarize students with Wesleyan's libraries so that they can learn how to navigate its many resources in future courses and intellectual pursuits. To this end, we will spend a considerable amount of time in the stacks, in Special Collections, and learning from our librarians.
