Artificial Intelligence and Other Digital Tools for Learning Another Language

This course will explore the applications of generative artificial intelligence and other technologies to enhance the language learning process. Through readings of current literature in the fields of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and language pedagogy, as well as hands-on experience, students will develop an understanding of guiding principles for implementing various technologies soundly in language learning activties. Class format will include conversations based on readings and work on projects using various technologies such as generative AI, augmented reality, and virtual reality environments; video games; and dedicated language learning software. Students will develop sample learning activities, participate in a presentation for the language teaching/learning community, and develop a project of their choice. This course is well suited to students with an interest in learning languages and understanding pedagogical approaches to the teaching of languages and cultures.
