Translation as Worldmaking
WRCT 157
Spring 2026
Section: 01

This course introduces translation as a creative, ethical, and collaborative practice that shapes literature, culture, and the movement of ideas across languages and media. Students will explore translation as history, theory, and craft through readings by translation scholars and practicing translators, alongside examples from literary, audiovisual, and digital contexts, including machine translation and AI. Each week combines discussion with hands-on translation activities, emphasizing choice, responsibility, and perspective. The course treats translation as a way to think about power, identity, and how meaning changes across contexts. Knowledge of a second language is encouraged, but not required.
