Remembering the Holocaust
CJST 235
Spring 2027
Section: 01

How should the Holocaust be remembered? How do we want it to be remembered, and how can we ensure that it will be? These questions preoccupied Jews even as the genocide was unfolding, and many documented their experiences in diaries, while a few were able to clandestinely photograph life and death in the camps. Today, these questions are more urgent than ever, as we are living through the final era in which it is still possible to engage personally with Holocaust survivors; soon, none will remain alive. In this course, we will explore the different ways, formats, and perspectives through which the Holocaust has been remembered: diaries, fiction, art-house and commercial films, limited series, graphic novels, art installations, recorded testimonies, still photography, social media projects, memorials and museums, televised trials, and more. We will ask what was and what is the "right" way to remember the Holocaust, and whether such a way even exists. We will also discuss the rise of Holocaust denial and examine how AI can be used both to promote it and to combat it. The course will include close readings, guest speakers, virtual visits, and creative projects.
