Parenting
PSYC 344Z
Summer 2026
Section: 01

This course engages students with the science and practice of parenting through an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural lens. A critical component of the course is the integration of interdisciplinary perspectives on parenting-related topics that highlight the cultural nuances that inform parenting norms, beliefs, and practices. Consequently, assigned readings will be based on selected chapters and empirical research articles within the fields of psychology, sociology, and anthropology. Students will also evaluate the relevance and validity of parenting-related content in popular media (e.g., social media, websites, books, podcasts, and blogs), in relation to published theory and empirical research. Student evaluation will be largely based on students' contributions (written and oral) to class discussions. Assignments are designed to assess students' ability to understand, critique, and apply course content. Topics include parenting styles, discipline, parent-child sleep, and gender socialization. All assigned readings will be posted in Moodle.
