Latin American Philosophies of Education
SPAN 243
Fall 2026
| Section:
01
|
This course offers an intellectual inquiry into educational thought situated firmly within the historical and cultural realities of Latin America. It asks how thinkers and educators from the region -- which includes Brazil and the Caribbean -- critique eurocentric models and affirm local traditions of schooling and knowledge. Thinking from the American university, we will explore what it means to consider the classroom a site of epistemic resistance that challenges the coloniality of power permeating teaching and learning across the hemisphere. Topics studied include colonial and decolonial pedagogy; feminist and ecofeminist pedagogies; popular education in campesino, indigenous, labor, and transnational movements; liberation theologies and pedagogies; rural teaching and teacher training; education and land dispossession; debt; schooling in times of war, climate disaster, and incarceration; and the crisis of the modern university. Readings include materials from Paolo Freire, Leopoldo Zea, José Vasconcelos, Ochy Curiel, the Landless Workers Movement (MST), Enrique Dussel, Yuderkys Espinosa, Emma Chirix, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Willy Thayer, Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui, Verónica Gago and Lucí Cavallero. |
