Tracing Identities: Graphic Narrative in the Hispanophone World
SPAN 252
Spring 2027
Section: 01

This course traces the construction of identities in Hispanophone graphic novels by focusing on how they build alternative spaces. Graphic novels have become highly popular in Spain, in part, for how they have created a space of dissent, a space where predominant discourses on identity, migration, memory, race, and gender are being reexamined, questioned, and (re)constructed. After an introduction to key concepts in comic studies, students will engage with relevant works by artists from Spain, Equatorial Guinea, or Argentina, such as Ana Penyas, Pere Ortín y Nzé Esono Ebale, Paco Roca, Quan Zhou Wu, Marcela Garcés, or Pepita Sandwich among others. By discussing the content of these graphic novels, students will develop crucial humanistic skills such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and cultural competencies and become familiar with a broad range of human experiences as well as major global events. Materially speaking, we will focus on their unique textual/visual medium and how they dialogue with other media, especially photography, but also cinema, and literature. Coursework includes critical readings, visual and textual analysis, and creative writing/drawing. This class is taught in Spanish.
