Body, Self and Society (FYS)
FGSS 105
Fall 2026
| Section:

In this course we explore the relation between the body, self, and society, and how the body can be viewed from social and cultural perspectives. We will examine the social construction of the normative body, looking at these in relation to gender, race, sexuality, and ability/disability and other social categories, and also consider representations of marginalized bodies. We will look at the coding of bodies in gendered, classed, racial, and ethnic terms, and consider how bodies 'figure,' so to speak, in current political struggles. We will also pay attention to how embodiment is felt and experienced, not as a universal site for perception, but rather as a potential space of feeling social difference and differentiation. The course will use a range of texts and materials from a range of scholarly fields, including feminist and queer theory, phenomenology, philosophy of mind/embodied mind theory, the medical humanities, and disability studies, and will look at representations of the body in film, social media, performance art, and other cultural sites. |
