The Native Northeast
ANTH 332
Fall 2026
| Section:
01
|
The Indigenous peoples of northeastern North America have been on the frontlines of settler colonialism for over four hundred years. Nevertheless, numerous sovereign Indigenous nations resolutely persist in their homelands despite conditions of intense constraint, their members enacting trajectories for regional thriving that often diverge from those of the colonial mainstream. Guided by materials from Indigenous studies, anthropology, and history, this course will foreground the work of Indigenous scholars, activists, and artists who engage the northeast as a decidedly -- although not exclusively -- Indigenous space. Focusing primarily on Indigenous peoples living south of the U.S.-Canada border in the present and recent past, the course will center topics including the politics of Indigenous sovereignty, enduring relations with the more-than-human world, land return, and the contestation of regional Indigenous erasure. |
