Un-Ruley Grammar: Teaching English Grammar to Speakers of Other Languages
EDST 212
Spring 2027
| Section:
01
|
What is the past perfect progressive and how do I explain it to my students? Many English teachers use grammar correctly but can't explain why and this course bridges that gap. We'll learn grammatical rules from the ground up and explore effective teaching strategies. As part of that process, we'll explore various theories of grammars from scholars like Chomsky and Halliday, as well as investigate who decides what's "correct" in different contexts and how academic grammar standards emerged. Cross-linguistic comparisons encouraged but not required. This course is designed for writing tutors, English majors, Education Studies students, and anyone interested in English grammar. |
