| This course may be repeated for credit. |
This course is intended for those who would like to learn about the wide variety of instrumental and vocal genres known as "Latin jazz." Students should have intermediate to advanced musical ability, but singers who are fluent in Spanish are highly desirable. Students should have comfort with a mix of reading and improvisation, as Latin jazz charts are often a combination of chord symbols and classical reading. The main genres we will explore are salsa, bachata, bossa nova, rhumba. Repertoire from Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Chucho Valdés will be mixed with jazz standards performed in the Latin jazz idiom. The final project will consist of a public concert. |
