|
This course explores conspicuous consumption and hospitality in Rome during the early Empire. Through translating selections from Horace's Satires and Martial's Epigrams -- with a tasty detour into the cookbook recipes attributed to Apicius -- we will examine how some of ancient Rome¿s wittiest writers used themes of food and friendship to explore urban life and social status. Students will continue developing their skills in reading Latin poetry, with emphasis on grammar, close reading, and critical analysis. The course is appropriate for students at the intermediate and advanced levels.
This course satisfies the Literature and Performance requirement for the Classical Studies Major. |
