Introduction to Ethnic Studies
AMST 202
Fall 2026
Section: 01

This course introduces students to the key terms and concepts of Ethnic Studies, an interdisciplinary field that emerged out of student of color struggles in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s. Through its relational, intersectional approach to this historic knowledge project, this class explores the fields of Native American and Indigenous Studies; Black Studies and African American Studies; Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies; and Chicanx and Latinx Studies. Drawing from a range of scholarly and non-academic texts and media (readings, films/videos, artwork), we will critically study the historical and ongoing construction of race, ethnicity, Indigeneity, gender, and sexuality within and beyond the United States. In the process, we will deeply engage such topics as Indigenous sovereignty and settler colonialism; gender and sexual violence and liberation; colonial epistemologies and cultures; empire and militarization; and art, activism, and abolition.
