What is it that we care about when we say we care about justice? We talk about justice in a number of important areas of contemporary life: criminal justice, environmental justice, social justice, etc. Does justice mean the same thing in each of these settings? Is justice a quality of individuals, a group, or a state? This course puts the approaches of ancient philosophers (Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, etc.) into conversation with contemporary philosophers (Rawls, Sen). From this background, we will try to put these theoretical notions of justice into action in thinking through how we ought to bring about justice in a variety of different areas of life.
This course can be applied towards the History, Politics, and Social Justice Track of the Classical Studies Major. |
